What You Should Know Before Installing Solar Panels

If you are considering installing solar panels for your home there are a number of facts that you need to know.  These facts will not only help you determine whether you should install the panels, but also how they should be installed.  Incorrectly installed panels can cause a number of problems for your home and panels.

Can Your Roof Support The Panels?

The first point you need to consider is whether or not your roof is suitable for solar panels.  If you buy roof panels, but have a roof which cannot support them you will either have roofing issues or have wasted money on the panels.  Before buying panels you need to check that your roof gets enough sunlight and that the structural integrity of the roof is sound.  If you cannot place the panels on the roof then you will need to consider getting standing panels that are placed on the ground.

Have You Done An Energy Audit

Before you install solar panels you will need to complete an energy audit on your home.  While the panels will give you renewable energy, you need to ensure that you are using it effectively.  If your home is not energy efficient then you are going to need more panels and this could be a cost that you can avoid.  When completing the energy audit you should look at where you are using the most energy and what can be done to decrease the energy amount you need. We recommend Solar Power People.

Is Your Installer Trustworthy?

If you are not going to be installing the solar panels yourself then you need to ensure that you have a trustworthy installer.  It is important that you check the installer’s credentials and their references.  The accreditation that you will need to see is from NABCEP or the North American Board of Certified Energy Practitioners.  You should also look for an installer that is likely to still be in business when you need to maintain your solar panels.

Solar panels do not have any moving parts which mean that they will have less maintenance.  However, if something does happen to the panels during the warranty period you need to know that you can contact the installer to remedy this.  When looking at the trustworthiness of your installer you should also check whether they offer a warranty or if you are getting it from the panel manufacturer.
